Thyroid - Neck Ultrasound

What happens during the scan and why?

Neck Ultrasounds use ultrasound imaging to examine soft tissues in the head and neck region. They can be useful in investigating the Salivary glands, Lymph nodes and Thyroid as well as lesions, infections and injuries to the soft tissues of the neck.
A gel will be applied to your skin over the area to be scanned. This allows the sensor to slide easily over the skin and helps to produce clearer pictures. During the scan the Radiologist will look at the images on the television screen and, if necessary, look at the record of the images later, before writing a report.

Thyroid ultrasound is a sound wave picture of the thyroid gland taken by a hand-held instrument and translated to a 2-dimensional picture on a monitor. It is used in diagnosis of tumors, cysts or goiters of the thyroid, and is a painless, no-risk procedure.
